A software update is one of the coolest things to have on a smartphone. It brings new looks to your phone, fixes bugs, patch vulnerabilities, and brings improvements you may/might not notice. On Android, Google does send regular updates to help fix issues and bring new features to devices. These updates are now being modified by every OEMs running Android to suit their custom skins. So, it can be a very horrible situation when your phone won’t update.
In most cases, this could be caused by insufficient storage, low battery, bad internet connection, aged phone, etc. Either your phone doesn't receive updates anymore, can't download/install pending updates, or the updates failed halfway, this article exists to help fix the issue when your phone won’t update.
Check the Internet connection
Right off the bat, you need an active internet connection to download any software update on your device. In a case where you have an insufficient/expired data subscription, you won't be able to download the software update.
Based on the type of update you have, it comes with huge files. Therefore, to avoid exhausting your mobile data over an update, we recommend you to update on Wi-Fi. Moreover, s0me phones may not let you download updates on mobile data, so ensure to connect to your Wi-Fi if you want to download the update.
No update available from the product side
Software updates don't just come on its own, it comes to serve two purposes - for security patches and new features. Therefore, you might not receive an update if your phone software is stable or doesn't have any issue to be addressed.
Moreover, there is a limited amount of time in which manufacturers support their phones with software updates. Especially if you use mid-range or an entry-level device, you may not get updates after a few months of purchase. A solution to that is to purchase a new phone to continue receiving updates.
Insufficient memory available in the device
Just like downloading your normal files like videos, songs, documents, etc., downloading a software update requires sufficient memory on your device. Do you think you have sufficient storage space? You might be getting it wrong, software update doesn't download/install on your SD card, and it requires free space on your internal storage.
If you don't have sufficient storage space, kindly try moving some huge files like videos to your SD card or computer. You can as well delete them if you don't have an SD card.
In case you want to move files to SD card in batch, consider using an app like Phone Master, it's fast and accurate.
Try downloading the update again as soon as you have sufficient storage space.
Restart your phone.
Today, many of us have overlooked the number of issues that can be fixed by just restarting our phones. Just like human beings need to sleep to be able to function well, your smartphone also needs restarting it periodically to clear some temporarily stored data and cache that may affect the device when it's too much.
This may also work in this case when you're not able to update your phone. All needed from you is just to restart your phone and try installing the update again. To restart your phone, kindly hold down the power button until you see the power menu, then tap restart. Otherwise, many smartphones also let you restart your phone by holding the power button for about 8-10 seconds. Let your phone restart fully and then try downloading/installing the software update again.
