Booking a transit with Kenyan Railways has never been easier! Come to think of it: you've got to take a trip to an SGR station, queue for several hours, fill out forms, and do all sorts of time-consuming and stressful tasks. The intriguing thing is that booking SGR online is not restricted to a particular terminal device. You can book a train right now from your mobile phone, desktop, laptop, iPad, or any device that can browse the internet.

How to Book SGR via Online

In just six steps, you can book a Standard Guage Railway SGR ticket with Kenyan Railways online. All you have to do is:

1. Visit the SGR website
2. Choose a Train
3. Select Your Destination
4. Book the Train!
5. Assign the number of people to travel
6. Pay for the ticket. Now, let’s go into details.

Steps to Book the Train

• Go to the SGR website to get started.
• Under “TRAIN TYPE,” select between Inter-Country and Express.
• Click the second box to view available SGR booking station options and choose your starting station.
• Tap the third box to pick your destination.

If you've chosen the Inter-Country train, places available include:

1. 1. 1. Nairobi Terminus
      2. Mombasa Terminus
      3. Voi
      4. Mtito Andei
      5. Athi River
      6. Emali
      7. Kibwezi
      8. Mariakani
      9. Miaseny

Meanwhile, only Nairobi Terminus and Mombasa Terminus are available if you’ve chosen the Express train.

• Next, tap the fourth box to select the travel date. And if you’re on the Express Train type, choose your departure time from the last box.
• Finally, tap Book a Train to search for available trains in your selected location.

Fill in the Number of People to Travel

After clicking “Book a Train” on the last page, you’ll see another page showing the prices of First Class and Economy tickets for both adults and children.

• Scroll down a bit to fill in the number of people to travel and the coach type.
• Finally, you’ll see the total transport fare, as well as departure and arrival time.
• Tap Book a Train to proceed.

Fill Out the Booking Information and Proceed With Payment

On this page, you’ll have to fill in your passengers' details according to what's on their ID cards. And speaking of ID cards, each adult (18 years and above) must provide a valid ID card or passport number, while children must also provide a valid ID or passport number of their guardian.

Once that’s done, kindly enter your MPESA mobile number for payment. You may also include your email address, but that’s not mandatory. Tap “Proceed for payment” to continue.

Confirm Your Reservation Details and Make Payment

Finally, you’ll have your trip summary on this page. Simply check through it to confirm if it's error-free. Next, confirm you are not a robot, accept the terms and conditions, and choose your payment option. You can either choose to Pay Now or Pay Later, depending on your readiness.

Besides booking online, you can also dial 639 on your Safaricom line to book an SGR ticket on your phone.

How to Make Payment for SGR Tickets Online

Once you’ve filled in the required information up to the stage where you need to choose the payment option, follow these steps to complete your booking by making payment.

As usual, you have two options: "PAY NOW" or "PAY LATER"

Follow these steps if you wish to PAY NOW:

1. Tap PAY NOW where it asks you to “Choose Payment Option”
2. The system will automatically process the payment using the MPESA account number you gave earlier.
3. You should receive a payment popup on your phone if you’ve given the right details.
4. Tap the popup message
5. Input your MPESA PIN, then tap OK.
6. Next, you’ll receive a confirmation SMS on your phone. Confirm the transaction by providing the OTP.
7. Finally, wait for about two minutes to validate your transaction on the page.

That’s how to book SGR online!

However, if the system can’t process the payment automatically, the next webpage will redirect you to make the payment from the MPESA menu on your phone. It is as simple as follows:

1. Open your MPESA menu on your phone.
2. Tap Lipa Na MPESA
3. Select Paybill
4. Enter the SGR Paybill number as shown on the screen (usually 809888)
5. Next, enter the account number as seen below the pay bill number.
6. Enter the equivalent amount, then tap
7. Finally, wait for a confirmation message from MPESA, then tap the “Confirm Payment” button on the SGR website.

That’s it. Simply print the ticket to finalize the session.
