chrome notifications not working

Getting Chrome notifications to work appropriately ensures that you don't miss all interview invitations, contracts, deals, etc. But it can get really frustrating when Chrome notifications are not working on Android. Maybe the notifications are not showing up at all, gets delayed, or doesn't make a sound; you can fix them in a few minutes.

Follow our 8 easy steps below to fix "Chrome notifications not working" on your Android phone

1. Reboot Your Android Phone

First things first: to fix Chrome notifications not working on your phone, we recommend you reboot your phone to ensure it's not a temporary glitch. Rebooting your phone will close all running apps and processes, which might be blocking Chrome from delivering its notifications.

It also refreshes the memory and core components of the phone to ensure they are functioning well. For the unaware, you can reboot your phone by holding down the Power button until the power menu is shown. Click or swipe Restart to reboot your phone.

2. Ensure You Have Active Internet Access

If rebooting your phone didn't do the trick, the next thing to try is diagnosing your internet connection. As you already know, Chrome needs internet access to retrieve and push out notifications on your phone. So you might not receive any notification when you're out of internet access.

A quick way to check that is by opening a new website on Chrome. You may also visit www.fast.com to check your internet speed. If you can't access any website, then you need to troubleshoot your network. You can toggle on/off airplane mode, reconnect to the Wi-Fi network, or check your mobile data plan, etc. Just do anything to restore the network.

3. Check Chrome's Notifications Settings and Permissions

Chrome will often notify you to grant notifications permission when you visit a website. You won't get notifications from the website if you didn't respond or blocked the prompt. To fix Chrome notifications not showing, follow these steps to check and allow websites to post notifications.

  • Open the Google Chrome browser
  • Look straight to the top-right corner and tap the stacked 3-dot button to view the browser options.
  • Tap Settings from there.
  • Scroll down a bit and select Site Settings.
  • Hit Notifications from there.
  • First, ensure the Notifications button is turned on, then tap the "Blocked" drop-down button to view websites that you've blocked from sending push notifications.
  • Review the websites. Click on anyone you want to unblock, and tap Allow.

After ensuring notifications are in order right from the Chrome app, you need to check Android notifications and permission settings for Chrome as well. Here's how to do so.

  • Launch Chrome and tap the 3-dot button at the top-right corner.
  • Tap the Settings option.
  • Select Notifications from the options to visit the Android notifications settings page.
  • First, ensure "Show notifications" is enabled; then go through individual notification sections.
  • Turn on the relevant ones.

4. Update Chrome

Meanwhile, if Chrome notifications are still not working after those solutions, we recommend you update the Chrome app for a better experience. Apps might come with bugs or wrong codes sometimes, which halts the user experience. But developers also release updates to fix the problems, so updating your Chrome app might fix the notifications problem.

  • Open the Play Store on your phone
  • Tap your profile icon at the top-right corner.
  • Select my apps & games. (If you're still on the old Play Store, you'll need to select it from the side menu instead)
  • On the "My apps & games" interface, you'll see a list of available updates. Scroll through the apps to see if there's an update for Chrome and update it.

5. Check Sound Settings and Turn Off Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb is a solid feature on Android that helps you pause visual and sound notifications from your apps. To fix Chrome notifications not working on your phone, ensure you disable Do Not Disturb when you're not using it.

You'll find the Do Not Disturb quick toggle on the quick-settings panel; just swipe down from the top of the screen twice to locate and disable it. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Do Not Disturb to turn it off.

Additionally, ensure you give your phone adequate sound volume and tone to ensure you don't miss sound notifications from Chrome. Simply go to Settings > Sounds to increase the Ring/Notification volume.

6. Disable Battery Optimization for Chrome

Though Chrome is a system app on most Android phones, various Android phone manufacturers have different ways of optimizing the battery for better performance and usage. And if Chrome was optimized to use less battery on your phone, you might miss notifications when you're not actively using it. To fix that, you need to ensure Chrome is not optimized on your phone, follow the steps below to do so.

  • Open Settings on your Android phone.
  • Click on Apps & Notifications
  • Select Special app access
  • Hit Battery Optimization
  • Tap the "Not optimized" drop-down menu on the Battery optimization interface and select "All apps".
  • Scroll down to find Chrome and set it to not optimized.

After whitelisting Chrome from battery optimization, you should also look out for Battery/Power saving mode on your phone. When enabled, Battery saver does all it takes to minimize your battery usage but restricts apps from working normally.

To fix Chrome not working on your Android, simply turn off the battery saver when necessary. You'll find a Battery Saver tile in the quick settings tray; ensure its disabled. If it's not in the quick-settings tray, go to Settings > Battery to disable battery saver.

7. Enable Background Data Usage for Chrome

You should also ensure background data is turned on if Chrome notifications are still not showing up, Follow these steps to do so.

  • From your app drawer, find the Chrome app icon and Long-press it.
  • Tap on App info.
  • On Chrome's app info interface, select Mobile data & Wi-Fi.

You'll see an overview of data used on Chrome and two options with toggles below the screen. Turn on Background data to ensure Chrome can synchronize in the background. You may also enable unrestricted data usage if you want Chrome to stay connected always, even when the data saver is turned on.

In case you didn't enable unrestricted data usage for Chrome, you'll need to turn off the Data saver on your phone to continue recovering Chrome notifications. You can find that on the quick-settings tray as well.

8. Reinstall Chrome

One last solution we recommend you should try if Chrome notifications are still working on your Android phone is to reinstall it. Just uninstall and install it again. Doing that will restore the Chrome app to its first state. You'll lose your custom settings, permissions, etc. But fortunately, you won't lose your browsing history, bookmarks, and saved passwords. Here's how to reinstall Chrome on your Android.

  • Open the Play Store on your phone and search for Chrome.
  • On the Chrome app page on the Play Store, tap Uninstall to downgrade it to the factory version.
  • After that, tap the Update (or Install) button to reinstall Chrome.
  • Launch Chrome after reinstalling it and let your Google account synchronize.

After that, all you need is to start setting up your Chrome space again. You'll see a prompt to allow push notifications when next you visit a website. Allow the websites you want to receive notifications on your Android phone.
