Today, almost everything we do on our smartphones requires an internet connection. And, while mobile networks have become increasingly reliable over the years, it can be aggravating when yours fails. What can I do if my mobile data is turned on but not working? Check out our tried-and-true solutions for resuming your lost mobile connection.

Reasons Why Moblie Data Doesn't Work

A simple software bug, harmed hardware, or even a system-wide outage that takes down the entire mobile network can all cause a no data connection error. Here are a few tried-and-true methods for getting your mobile phone's cellular data back online on iPhone and Android.

Part 1. How to Fix Your Mobile Data When It's Not Working

These troubleshooting methods have been shown to work on the vast majority of iPhone and Android smartphone models, and they may also work on devices from other mobile manufacturers.

Step 1. Reboot your Phone. It's very easy to reboot your phone. Rebooting your phone will frequently fix a wide range of technical glitches and bugs.

Step 2. Turn off your Smartphone.Unlike a restart or simply turning off your phone's screen before putting it in your pocket. If the restart doesn't work, a full shutdown of your iPhone or Android smartphone is worth a shot because it forces a re-connection to your mobile network.

Step 3. Deactivate Airplane Mode. Don't forget to turn off your mobile device's Airplane Mode after you've been in a movie theatre or on a plane. Even if you don't have a data connection, this feature may still be enabled. NOTE: If you have already turned off Airplane Mode, you can try turning it on and then off again. Some people have reported that cycling in and out of this mode fixes their mobile connections.

Step 4. Turn off WIFI. This should not happen, but it does, particularly on older iPhone models. Because Wi-Fi internet has been shown to interfere with mobile network connectivity, turning it off may help you regain access to your cellular data.    One of the main reasons this works in some cases is that you're not getting a strong enough Wi-Fi connection, but you're still connected. So, you could be in your yard or almost out of range of the router, but not far enough to drop the connection and reconnect to the mobile network. You can't connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or mobile in this area. Remember to turn your Wi-Fi back on when you're finished. You don't want to go over your monthly data limit.

Step 5. Turn off Bluetooth. Similar to the Wi-Fi issue, having Bluetooth enabled on Android and iPhone smartphones has been known to interfere with cellular connections. If your Bluetooth continues to  with your phone's cellular data connection, you should try permanently disabling it and connecting your Bluetooth devices to your tablet or laptop instead.

Step 6. Examine your network service provider. If you receive the error message "mobile network not available," the cause of the problem could be a network outage. Check your provider's official Twitter account to see if this is the case. This social network is used by many businesses to keep users up to date on network status and updates.

Step 7. Switch on your moblie data. Another thing to double-check is that your mobile data is turned on. It is a phone setting that must be enabled, just as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled to use those connection types.

Step 8. Download and install the most recent. Updating to the most recent version of the iOS or Android operating system can frequently resolve many bugs related to your mobile data not working. To function properly, some carriers even require the most recent operating system versions.   Always double-check that the mobile carrier Twitter accounts you follow have a blue checkmark next to their names or are linked to the official company website. In public tweets, never reveal your account or billing information.

Step 9. Examine your sim card. You might have forgotten to put your SIM card back into your personal smartphone if you've been travelling abroad. This could be the reason you were unable to activate your cellular data network on a new phone. It's also a good idea to check to see if the SIM card is damaged. Small scratches are usually acceptable, but if it has burn marks, it should be replaced.

Step 10. A factory reset should be done. The last thing you should try is to perform a factory reset on your iPhone or Android because it might delete some of your data. But many issues can be resolved by doing this, so giving it a shot before purchasing a new phone is definitely worthwhile.

Step 11. Change the APN protocol to IPv4/IPv6. Though not universally applicable to all Android devices, setting your APN protocol to IPv4 will prevent your mobile network from connecting to the internet, even if you have an active subscription. That is why many people say, "I have data but no internet connection on my device."  While IPv4 is the primary protocol for most internet communications, some advanced servers may require IPv6 to function properly. Set your device's APN protocol to IPv4/IPv6 by following the steps below.

  • Start your device.
  • Select Network & Internet (or SIM card and mobile network on some devices.)
  • If you have dual SIM cards, choose the one for mobile data. E.g. SIM 1.
  • Then, select Access Point Names (APN).
  • Select the first APN in use.
  • Scroll down and choose APN protocol.
  • Configure it to IPv4/IPv6.
  • Finally, tap the three-dot button in the upper right corner, then hit you might get a warning prompt. To confirm the changes, tap OK.
